An American Tail: Somewhere Out There

A redo of 2024-10-04 with a much nicer backing track, though this one also suffers from being compressed to within an inch of its life and I think that’s the primary reason that, no matter how much EQ and volume automation I use, I can’t get my voice to blend: it’s almost like there’s no space left in the backing track for my voice to go.

I’m not sure how Pepita Salim made her recording blend so well, but I strongly suspect it works as well as it does because her backing track was done on an actual acoustic piano.

The other issue is that I sound a little boxy because this apartment really doesn’t have great acoustics and I recorded very close; even with a small diaphragm condenser like the AKG P170, there is a little bit of proximity effect audible. Nowhere near as pronounced as the Audio Technica AT-2020 though, thankfully — and that’s why I chose to change mics for tonight. Doing a huge negative EQ at 135 Hz does seem to help a lot in this regard.
